Grow Hemp in Minnesota

1) How can I become a hemp grower in Minnesota?

The application period for 2022 opens on November 1, 2021.

First-time applicants: must submit fingerprints and pass a criminal background check.

Returning applicants: do not need to resubmit fingerprints.

2) What does it cost to grow hemp in Minnesota?

Grower License – $150

Each Grow Location – $250

Each Additional Inspection for THC Testing Beyond First Harvest – $250

Each Additional Sample for THC Testing Beyond First Sample – $125

License Change Fee – $50

Processor License – $250

3) How long is my hemp license good for?

Each license expires on December 31 of the year issued. Licensees must reapply annually.

4) What if my plants test above 0.3% Total THC?

If Total THC is between 0.3%–1%, you may remediate, destroy the crop, or request a second sample/retest.

If Total THC is above 1%, the crop must be destroyed (no remediation allowed).

Remediation can be done by removing/destroying flower material (keeping stalks/stems/leaves/seeds) or shredding the entire plant to biomass. Remediated biomass must be sampled and confirmed ≤ 0.3% Total THC before entering commerce.

5) When should I plant hemp in Minnesota?

Ideal seeding dates are mid-May to mid-June. Soil temps should be at least 45–50°F.

For CBD production, many growers transplant seedlings or clones into the field.
