Grow Hemp in Rhode Island

1) RHODE ISLAND HEMP LAW & LEGISLATION?

Hemp Growth Act — an act relating to agriculture that permits the growth of hemp by properly licensed individuals who have applied and met the requirements of the chapter.

7 farmers were licensed to grow hemp in Rhode Island in 2020.

2) What is the difference between a hemp grower and a handler?

“Grower” — a person or entity who produces hemp for commercial purposes.

“Handler” — a person or entity who produces or processes hemp or agricultural hemp seed into commodities, or who manufactures hemp products.

3) What is required in the hemp application?

Industrial hemp grower, handler, or dual-license applicants must provide:

Name, address, email, and phone for: (a) the applicant who will supervise/manage hemp activities; (b) any person partnering or consulting on growing/handling; (c) the applicant’s employees and, if an entity, its officers; (d) the business EIN; and (e) the status of each license.

Application cost: $250 (non-refundable, even if a license is not granted).

4) Rhode Island state hemp laws allow for CBD products such as:
  • Hemp topicals
  • Hemp concentrates and extracts (oils and tinctures)
  • Industrial hemp for building or fiber materials
  • Industrial hempseed (food product)
  • Industrial hempseed oil (food product)
