Grow Hemp in Colorado
1) Is there a limit to how many hemp acres and/or square feet that you can register?
There is no limit on the size or amount of acres and/or square feet you can register. You may register as many acres or square feet as you want. However, each registration must cover one contiguous (continuous/connected) land area contained within a single boundary line.
2) Reporting timelines regarding hemp
Three reports are required during the registration period:
- Pre-Planting Report (Appendix B with the application).
- Planting Report within 10 days of planting.
- Harvest Report at least 30 days prior to harvest (±5-day window allowed from your listed “Harvest Date”). Any changes must be submitted on an amended harvest report.
3) Revised hemp rules in Colorado
On June 9, 2021, the Ag Commission approved changes to “Rules Pertaining to the Administration and Enforcement of the Industrial Hemp Regulatory Program Act” (8 CCR 1203-23). The changes became effective July 30, 2021. View the proposed changes here. A second rulemaking round was planned for fall 2021 to further align with the USDA Final Rule and the State Plan.
4) Is there a deadline to apply?
No. Registrations are issued year-round—there are no submission deadlines. It’s recommended to apply 30–45 days before planting due to ~30-day processing times. Corrections or additional info requests may extend processing. A registration must be issued before planting; submitting an application does not guarantee approval.
5) Who to contact to obtain my hemp license?
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) regulates processing, processed hemp materials, and products intended for human consumption or use. Registration with CDPHE is required for those activities.
