Welcome Paraguayan Hemp Growers!
Paraguay’s introduction of hemp and CBD had similar roots to its neighbors of Brazil and Mexico. In 2016, the company HempMeds received approval from the Paraguayan government to export their product Real Scientific Hemp Oil (RSHO) to help a teen diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut. His condition caused constant seizures throughout the day and was unresponsive to traditional pharmaceuticals. However, the CBD rich oil proved to be an effective therapy and helped to reduce the overall amount of episodes he had in a day. The success of treatment would set the framework of hemp and CBD adoption for the years ahead.
In 2019, Paraguay’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock passed regulations to allow the cultivation and industrialization of the hemp and CBD products. The guidelines limit the level of delta 9 THC to .5% and allows the cultivation of 2 hectares or 5 acres of hemp.

Paraguay’s president and other policy makers have deemed hemp as a “crop of national interest” and want to encourage not only corporations to take part, but local farmers and indigenous communities to participate in the growing economy of hemp and CBD.
Hemp is currently grown in 14 out of the 17 provinces in Paraguay and is estimated to produce around 5,000 hectares of hemp and CBD. With these numbers and concrete trade partnerships, Paraguay has now achieved industry goals of becoming the third largest supplier of hemp worldwide. Its global partners include the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and numerous European nations. Paraguay’s exports include:
Hemp Flowers
Hemp Fiber
Hemp Seeds
Hemp Foods
CBD derivative products
The hemp and CBD business are proving to have positive impacts on Paraguay’s economy, boost family income, and overall raise per capita GDP. Estimates report that a hectare of industrial hemp can convert to 10,000,000 Paraguayan Guarani or roughly equivalent to $1,600 USD for individual farmers. Paraguay’s geographical location and rich soil, also allows farmers to achieve 2 crop cycles a year.
In addition to economic benefits, the cultivation of hemp has huge ecological benefits! Over the decades, Paraguay has suffered millions of hectares to deforestation and the consequences on the environment is still not fully realized. However, industrial hemp can help combat the negative impacts of deforestation and reduce climate change. Currently, the 5,000 hectares of hemp in Paraguay can sequester 310,000 tons of carbon. Therefore, the government has carbon- neutral goals in the near future, if 100,000+ hectares of hemp can be planted.
The framework for Paraguay’s Hemp and CBD industries are advancing. National programs have been implemented to:
Promote the benefits of hemp and facilitate diversification in production among cooperatives and associations.
Generate greater added value with appropriate technology.
Ensure quality control.
Coordinate supplementary regulations and recommendations for such things as phytosanitary and biosafety issues related to hemp cultivation.
Promote the introduction and registration of varieties of cannabis in the National Register of Commercial Cultivars (RNCC); commercialize and manage quality control of seeds
Develop strategic alliances with companies, associations and others, establish cooperation agreements with national and international entities, and set strategies for national and international marketing for Paraguayan hemp producers.
