Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When can I plant feminized hemp seeds?

Planting time can vary widely throughout the spring season and into the summer depending on your particular local climate, your plant spacing, and your harvest goals.   In a very temperate climate with no freeze cycle, our full-term hemp cultivars can be started outdoors as early as mid-March and grow very large, easily filling in a field with 6 ft spacing.  In cooler regions, seeds or starts can be planted in the ground after the last spring frost and as late as mid-July.  Late planting will require a much tighter spacing but yields can still be abundant.   Full-term hemp plants flower as a result of the natural increase in hours of darkness as winter approaches.  This means that spring planting time will not affect when the crop will mature as much as the size of the plants at maturity.   In very hot climates it's best to plant early to establish deep roots before the heat of summer.  In the absence of cold fall temperatures, plants can be planted as late as September and harvested into December,  but overall yield will be diminished as a result of the decreasing intensity of sunlight into the Winter.  Tell us about your climate and your goals and we would be happy to help you determine the best planting time, spacing, and cultivar choices for your hemp farm.

  2. When can I harvest hemp?

Harvesting your hemp crop is more exact of an art than a science but also depends on your goals.  To determine the optimal harvest time it is essential to test your hemp crops cannabinoid profile (CBD, THC, etc).  Test early and test often!  Harvest when you've reached an abundant terpene count and calyx development, and your crop remains compliant.  Depending on your climate and latitude this will vary from 7-9 weeks into flower.

  3. How much yield can I expect per hemp plant?

A healthy hemp plant should easily yield 1-2 lbs or more of dried and trimmed flower if grown through a full season in healthy conditions. The flower yield of hemp direct result of the size and health of the root system and the length of time a plant spends in vegetation. Large plants will yield more overall in most circumstances but smaller plants spaced closer together can also be very abundant and require fewer overall resources to grow.

  4. How many hemp plants can I grow per acre?

That depends a lot on where you are planning to grow and when you are planning to start your plants but most farmers we work with utilize somewhere between 3 and 5 ft spacing which equates to about 1500-5000 plants per acre. Plant early and space ‘em wider or plant late and space ‘em tight. Your farming and harvest methods can play a big role too… Do you want a bunch of small compact plants with less yield but easier maintenance??? Or would you prefer a field of overhead bombers that may put out a few lbs per plant??? The choice is yours but we are happy to talk you thru the options and make the best decision for your needs.

  5. What does “feminized” hemp seed mean?

Feminization is the process of creating a hemp seed stock that contains only xx chromosomes, resulting in a plant population of pure female hemp plants.  There are many ways to create feminized hemp seeds, some better than others.  At best though, you can expect to see one or two males per thousand plants that are chromosomally female, but phenotypically male.  It is always critical to walk your fields before the onset of female flowers to find and remove these rogue males.  Anything less than a 99% feminization rate indicates a poor process and the introduction of either unknown male pollen, or worse, hermaphrodite pollen.  We take considerable care in our proprietary process to ensure that our feminized hemp seeds are created using only selectively bred, pure female pollen donor plants, resulting in a full, healthy, and seed-free crop at harvest.

  6. How can I be confident that my hemp seeds are female?

We guarantee our feminized hemp seeds to be 99.9% feminized or better.  Even with the best of feminization processes, it is likely that a very small population of plants will appear male and produce viable pollen even though they may remain chromosomally xx or female.  It is critical to find and remove these plants from your field before they pollinate your crop

  7. Is it legal to grow industrial hemp where I live?

The 2018 federal farm bill legalized the production and sale of industrial hemp throughout the nation.  Please check with your local department of agriculture or other governing agency to determine your local guidelines and permit process.

  8. How do I make sure my hemp crop can be harvested legally?
