Thailand’s tropical climate provides ideal growing conditions numerous crops, especially hemp! Geographic equatorial location allows for year round sun and warm weather, perfect for growing massive hemp plants. Thailand’s vast amount of rivers and substantial rainfall ensures a farmer that their crop will not undergo any dry periods, thus keeping the hemp plants happy and healthy.
Furthermore, Thailand’s soil is incredibly rich and abundant with essential micronutrients, with the additional benefit that the soil is slightly acidic, which again is ideal for hemp because they thrive in a slightly lower pH. Cultivating hemp is no easy task but can be very rewarding and will benefit society in the process. With our expert knowledge of hemp and seed breeding, we strive to provide the highest quality hemp seeds on the market.
Thailand’s “New Notification” and New Era of Green
Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) has introduced several progressive policies regarding the use of cannabis and hemp derived products. In 2019, Thailand became the first Southeast Asian nation to legalize cannabis for medicinal and research purposes; in addition, allowed for the production of hemp in use of textiles, oils, cosmetics, garments, and other products. However, only government programs and entities were able to participate, no permits were issued to the private sector.
In December of 2020, the Food and Drug Administration, revised the Thai Narcotics Act B.E. 2522 (1976), which listed cannabis as Category 5 narcotic; and reclassified the plant, its extracts, and parts as exempt. The MOPH announced the “New Notification” which permitted the manufacture of:
Bark, trunk, fiber, stem and root of cannabis and hemp;
Leaves without shoot tip and flowers of cannabis and hemp
Cannabis and hemp extracts containing cannabidiol (CBD) and containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) not exceeding 1% by weight;
Cannabis and hemp residues after extraction containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) not exceeding 1% by weight
Hemp seed, hemp seed oil, or hemp seed extracts.
In February of 2021, the MOPH further revised and implemented the “Prohibited Food Notification”, which no longer prohibits the use of exempted cannabis and hemp products in food. These landmark changes in legislation provides opportunity for a new social construct in Thailand. A New Era of Green, where members of the public are no longer limited when applying for a permit, and are able to cultivate hemp for all purposes including- commercial, medicinal, educational, research or cultural in Thailand.
